Another rough sail
We were glad to arrive in Puerto Calero in Lanzarote, the last destination for the Morgan for a while. The 140 nautical mile sail from Puerto Mogán in Gran Canaria would normally have taken 20 to 24 hours, but wind and current were against us and with the deadline we have, we could not afford the time to wait for better winds.
On 19 September our sailing friend Gareth joined us on the Morgan, and we set off the following morning after giving Quirky a good walk. We knew the winds were not good, but we still assumed that we would do the trip in one go. Six hours later we decided that we would put into the marina in Las Palmas in the north east corner of the island of Gran Canaria. The winds and the waves were right on the nose, drastically slowing down our progress. Just getting to Las Palmas took nearly 10 hours. It was much better to simply get a good night’s rest in Las Palmas and set out the next day.
No sooner said than done. We were all tired after the trip so it was an early night for all on board. The next day, after taking our time and doing some chores such as maintenance on the Morgan and shopping, we set sail from Las Palmas. Luckily the weather was a little better, and we sailed through the night, arriving in Puerto Calero the following evening, 22 September.
The Morgan will stay in Puerto Calero for the duration that we are in the Netherlands for a forthcoming fund raising event.
